more help for forest managers

As with works monitoring, it can be difficult for forest managers to spend enough time on site.

Maybe there are budget concerns: a crofter has asked for a planting plan to be worked-up for some marginal ground and, although you do not wish to turn-down the business, investigating it will generate an internal cost (WIP) that will be hard to recover if the resulting scheme is small or contains too much unplantable ground.

We have all been in that situation.

I can assist in a difficult circumstance such as this, from a quick initial walkover to evaluate the site's potential for SRDP funded afforestation to more detailed investigations such as systematically surveying peat depth and digging soil pits.

If more extensive support is required, I can prepare a full and realistic planting plan, supported by a suite of documents to ensure that it is ready for submission to the conservancy office.

Furthermore, if time is of the essence, I can respond quickly and with a guaranteed completion date.

My fixed-price approach to work makes it easier for you to accommodate the external cost in your budget and my familiarity with the field of woodland creation allows me to get on with the work without taking-up too much of your time.

In a similar vein, I can provide the same service for restocking coupes.  Using GPS technology, I will identify areas of retained crop, map unplantable ground and produce a restocking plan that meets with your requirements, the requirements of your client, and any management or UKWAS plans that are in place.

The survey service I offer is not limited to the initial planning of new woodlands and areas of restocking, I can return to these areas after the trees have been planted to undertake stocking assessment work (formal or informal) and check deer fences.

In both instances, a written report is produced for your files that summarises my findings and is accompanied by digital photos and digital maps. Problems with fences can be identified on the ground with flash-tape if required and field notes supported by GPS records and lists of materials for the repair.  Your preferred fence contractor can then be provided with all the information required to do the follow-up work.

Of course, I am also able to undertake any other survey work according to your requirements.

For example, I can:

  • Survey rhododendron stands to the level of detail required when preparing a removal programme (e.g. plant size, the presence of flowers, access constraints for machinery).

  • Map non-native conifer regeneration in areas designated as broadleaved woodland.

  • Assess PAWS sites and produce the site-specific remedial plans necessary to satisfy UKWAS requirements.

  • Record windblow within productive stands.

  • Plan the route of new paths, quad tracks, or forest roads.

  • Identify areas of existing and potential natural regeneration that may form future project sites.

  • Undertake any other survey work that you would like done but just cannot find the time to do it yourself.
