Tree condition assessment, tree surveys and risk management plans.
tree surveys and risk management plans FROM A COMPETENT AND INSURED PROFESSIONAL
As with any other land owner or manager, social enterprises have a duty of care to avoid injury or damage to persons or property as a result of trees growing on their land.
The primary means available for demonstrating that reasonable care has been taken in this respect is to instruct a competent person to undertake a systematic inspection of the woodland (or trees) for the purpose of identifying hazards and producing a risk management plan that addresses them.
The plan should prescribe an inspection regime that is commensurate with the level of risk and it should identify and prioritise any arboricultural work that is necessary to make safe any dangerous trees.
While the plan does not need to be elaborate, it should be formal, written down, easy to use, unambiguous and appropriate in scope to the circumstances on the property in question.
As a LANTRA-qualified professional tree inspector, I am able to assist social enterprises by producing a tree risk management plan that meets with these requirements.
I am also able to undertake the tree inspection work that the plan recommends and implement any remedial arboricultural works that are prescribed.
In all aspects of my work, I endeavour to deliver value for money and to make it easy for customers to return with repeat business. I do this by ensuring that my tree risk management plans are keenly priced and tailored to reflect the specific situation on the ground and the requirements of the customer.
To ensure that I make the correct recommendations and understand the customer's needs, I undertake a free of charge preliminary assessment of the property. This allows me to meet the owner (or manager) and discuss his or her requirements without having to worry about time spent or fees accruing at this early stage.
Having done that, I can then suggest an appropriate approach to the survey and provide an estimate of the cost in writing.
I use digital mapping (GIS) to convert my survey fieldwork into maps that support the risk management plan. These maps are then supplied in PDF format so scale copies can be printed whenever required. Furthermore, I am happy to supply the raw data as an ESRI compatible shapefile, therefore allowing the social enterprise to maintain its own digital record of tree inspections and corrective actions if adequate GIS skills are present among staff or volunteers.
If these skills are not available within the social enterprise's staff or supporters, I can provide training on GIS at very reasonable rates as well as telephone support.
I also undertake BS5837 tree surveys to support planning applications. This will be useful to social enterprises that intend to develop buildings, campsites or implement any other change of land use that requires planning permission.
As with all of my work, my reports look professional and they are comprehensive, clear and formatted with the aim of making it easy for local government planners to understand the situation on the ground and approve an application.
