Small Man writes of Tall Wood

Okay, at 183 cm tall I am not exactly a "small man"* but I wanted this post to have a slightly mocking reference to the - somewhat unoriginal, I thought - name of a new timber structure that has been built at the University of British Columbia, Canada.

The building is called Tallwood House and it is 18 storeys high and made mostly of pre fabricated timber components, plus the usual steel and concrete elements.

It may not be entirely made from wood, but it is a pretty impressive undertaking that demonstrates the ongoing resurgence of timber framed buildings.

I thought that timber framed buildings started and finished with one or two storey affairs, so I was impressed to read that it has eighteen levels and is a stately fifty three metres tall.

There's a picture of the finished building at the bottom of this post.

For more information, please see the original post on the excellent Web Urbanist blog or go direct to the University of British Columbia's website to see their page on the building.

The UBC page also links to this interesting time lapse video of the construction process.

 * According to the Office of National Statistics, the average British male is 175.3 cm tall, so I am technically above average in both stature and, having now uncovered this fact, height-related smugness.....
